Child Friendly Schools

A Rights-based Approach to Improving Education

The Child Friendly Schools (CFS) approach, which is grounded in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), aims to create the conditions whereby all girls and boys can claim and enact their right to high quality education. This holistic approach includes the dimensions of a healthy, safe, and protective school environment; teaching and learning effectiveness; stakeholder participation; inclusiveness; gender responsiveness; and child rights promotion.

MWAI has worked with UNICEF and ministries of education in

Ghana, Turkmenistan, Oman, Kosovo, Uzbekistan, Moldova,

and Macedonia to develop CFS standards and indicators, and

to implement them in schools. Our consultants provide technical

assistance to national working groups through in-depth

trainings, roadmaps, and research-based educational resources. MWAI ensures that participants have opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills through pilot projects prior to national implementation, and we support sustainable approaches to system-wide change.
